Refugee Camp in Djibouti Swells as Yemenis Flee Houthi Offensive

Intensifying conflict along Yemen’s western coast has driven thousands of individuals to embark on perilous boat crossings across the Bab al-Mandab Strait toward Djibouti over the past ten days.

BBC correspondent Frank Gardner toured a refugee camp in Obock, a small coastal port town where authorities are bracing for the potential arrival of as many as 10,000 displaced individuals.

The United Nations International Organisation for Migration reported that migrants are navigating severely overcrowded vessels and arriving with minimal provisions of food and water.

These mass displacements were triggered by an offensive launched by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which aims to capture a strategic island and seize the vital port of Mokha.
