Rob Thomas Pays Tribute to Clive Davis: Remembering a Mentor and Music Icon

Rob Thomas, lead singer of Matchbox Twenty, reflects on his relationship with legendary music executive Clive Davis, who passed away at 94. Thomas recalls their first meeting during the creation of “Smooth,” his hit collaboration with Carlos Santana, and how Davis became a pivotal mentor and friend over the decades.

Thomas describes Davis’s iconic Memorial Day parties, where he made everyone feel special, and shares personal memories of their conversations, including debates over music choices and advice on his solo career. He emphasizes Davis’s unique ability to trust his instincts and guide artists based on passion rather than data-driven analytics.

“Losing Clive is the end of an era,” Thomas says. “There were a handful of people like him, people like Ahmet Ertegun — the last ones who weren’t all about the algorithm. There are fewer and fewer people running labels today who are completely guided by their own taste meter.”

Thomas recounts how Davis supported his work, from encouraging him to release “Chip Tooth Smile” as a single to advocating for his solo projects. He fondly remembers their last meeting at a play premiere, where Davis still displayed his vibrant personality despite his age.

Davis’s legacy, according to Thomas, lies in his ability to connect art with audiences through instinct and passion. “He never let anybody drown out that drive,” Thomas says. “If what his heart was telling him ran contrary to advice he was getting, he ran with his heart.”
