While fans of The War on Drugs await details on the band’s next full-length release following 2021’s I Don’t Live Here Anymore, multi-instrumentalist Robbie Bennett is stepping forward with his own ambitious project. He has announced the simultaneous release of two new double albums — Steloken and Circulation — both serving as successors to his 2020 solo debut, Permanent World. The albums drop on December 11 via American Dreams.

Born from initial explorations in piano and classical counterpoint, the recordings evolved through the distinctive keyboard setup Bennett employs with The War on Drugs. This includes the Oberheim OB-X8 synthesizer, a Fender Rhodes, and the Soma Terra, a polyphonic microtonal instrument equipped with a gyroscope and pressure-sensitive sensors. According to Bennett, his aim is to craft music that mirrors the experience of wandering through an uncharted space — compelling, ever-branching, and endlessly exploratory. “I want the music to be like you’re walking through an unfamiliar place you want to keep exploring and never have to circle back to where you started,” he explains.

This sense of sonic discovery is evident in two preview tracks now available: “Sister” from Steloken and “The Light On Your Face” from Circulation. Both offer a glimpse into the atmospheric and genre-blending landscape of the upcoming releases. Listen below.

Steloken and Circulation are out 12/11 on American Dreams.
