Chase Elliott accepted an unconventional lift to the Naval Air Station North Island on Saturday morning, riding on the back of a motorized scooter driven by fellow Cup Series driver and longtime friend Ryan Blaney.
The moment was captured by Katelyn Larson, prompting Blaney to joke later that afternoon in San Diego that she had “done us dirty” by filming the ride.
Blaney explained that both drivers were staying at the same hotel, and he offered Elliott a ride rather than letting him walk roughly two miles.
He compared the pair to “Harry and Lloyd,” a nod to the well-known scooter scene from Dumb and Dumber.
The added weight proved to be a problem for the scooter, however. Blaney said it was designed with limited battery range and a maximum load of about 220 pounds, meaning the two drivers exceeded what it was built to handle.
“I think we overheated it a little bit,” Blaney said.
Elliott laughed off the incident, noting that riding on the back of another driver’s scooter was not something he expected to do during the week.
Fortunately, Blaney had a second scooter available for the return trip, ensuring they would not have to repeat the overloaded ride.
