Sachin Tendulkar, widely regarded as one of cricket’s greatest batters, played under numerous iconic leaders during his illustrious career and also captained India himself. In a recent Reddit Q&A session, the legend was asked to identify his favorite captains, reflect on his own leadership tenure, and share his thoughts on South Africa’s current Test skipper.

Tendulkar Names Ganguly and Dhoni as His Top Captains

Tendulkar singled out Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni as the two captains he most enjoyed playing under. He featured under Ganguly during India’s run to the 2003 ODI World Cup final and was a pivotal member of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad led by Dhoni.

“As far as my favourite captains go, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni would definitely be at the top of my list! It was a great honour to lead the team as captain. However, I did not always have the freedom to pick my team entirely on my own. The BCCI today is a far more professional organisation than it was in the 1990s. Indian cricket also went through a particularly dark phase during that period,” Tendulkar explained.

Tendulkar Praises Bavuma’s Leadership

Reflecting on his own captaincy, Tendulkar led India in 25 Tests across two stints between 1996 and 2000. He acknowledged lacking full autonomy in team selection and stepped down in March 2000 following a home series loss to South Africa. Though offered the role again in 2007, he declined.

When asked to assess Temba Bavuma’s Test captaincy, the former India captain expressed strong admiration for the Proteas leader’s proactive approach and results.

“I truly admire Temba Bavuma’s spirit. He has led from the front and delivered some remarkable results for South African cricket. South Africa winning an ICC title is great for world cricket!” Tendulkar concluded.
