Carmen Efferson, described as Stevie Wonder’s former fiancée, alleges that the musician failed to complete essential repairs to the Hollywood Hills home.
Stevie Wonder’s reported one-time fiancée is resisting his efforts to remove her from the Hollywood Hills residence where she has lived rent-free since 1988.
Carmen Efferson filed a response to Wonder’s eviction lawsuit last month in Los Angeles Superior Court. In a Tuesday filing reviewed by Rolling Stone, Efferson accuses Wonder of breaching the warranty of habitability, arguing he did not maintain the property in a livable condition. Her filing cites damp or leaking ceilings and walls, holes in the walls, floors, and carpeting, damaged window screens and plumbing, and mold, among other issues.
Efferson has requested that the court order Wonder to cover her legal fees, complete repairs, and reduce the rent to a “reasonable rental value” until the problems are fixed. She also states that she has paid rent or provided nonmonetary services in exchange for occupying the premises. Additionally, she challenges Wonder’s claim to the property, asserting he is not the owner and therefore lacks standing to evict her.
A representative for Wonder did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
According to Wonder’s complaint filed October 22, the two had an oral agreement allowing her to live in the home rent-free for nearly 40 years. However, during the property insurance renewal process, Wonder’s representatives attempted to enter the home three times in July for an inspection. Efferson denied access and emailed Wonder’s attorney, David Huff, saying “fuck the fuck off,” according to lawsuit exhibits obtained by Rolling Stone.
In another message responding to Huff’s certified mail request for entry, Efferson wrote: “Regarding your ORDERS of entering into the place where I am living, I do not consent. Do not make any attempt to make any kind of contact with me.” After further correspondence, another attorney informed Efferson that the oral agreement had been revoked due to noncompliance, and she was served with an eviction notice setting a move-out date of August 27, 2026.
That deadline passed without Efferson vacating the property, leading to the civil lawsuit. Wonder is seeking her removal from the Hollywood home and $600 in damages, the amount he says he now owes due to a lapsed property insurance renewal.
