Harlequins’ difficult start to the Premiership season persisted on Saturday, suffering a third consecutive defeat of the campaign as Sale Sharks secured a hard-fought 28-24 victory at CorpAcq Stadium.
Sale mounted a comeback in the second half, clinching the win with a decisive 73rd-minute penalty try. This came after Harlequins’ returning star, Marcus Smith, had scored twice in the opening quarter to establish an early advantage.
Following their opening-day home defeat to Bristol, Sale have rebounded strongly, claiming back-to-back victories over Saracens and Harlequins. Despite earning their first points of the season, Harlequins’ loss leaves them anchored to the bottom of the standings.
Harlequins, following a heavy 48-0 defeat to Gloucester the previous week, displayed significantly greater resilience and attacking threat, particularly with Marcus Smith back in the lineup after recovering from a finger injury. However, Sale, despite not being at their absolute best, demonstrated enough grit to extend their winning streak against Quins to five consecutive matches in domestic and European competitions.
Harlequins held a narrow 17-14 lead at halftime, having scored three tries while also seeing two additional scores disallowed by the Television Match Official (TMO). The home side took an early lead in the third minute when hooker Sam Riley grounded the ball after a midfield combination between Marcus Smith and George Furbank. Smith later added a second try following excellent build-up play from Furbank.
Sale, playing without the injured Tom Curry, responded through Fijian flanker Elia Canakaivata, who scored on his first Premiership start. Smith soon sliced through the defense for his second try of the afternoon. Just before the break, Sale narrowed the gap when scrum-half Gus Warr crossed the line. Despite numerous errors from the Sharks, Harlequins secured a bonus point in the 53rd minute when Riley was driven over in a maul.
Sale fought back into contention through a try by lock Ben Bamber, sparked by a break from Nicky Smith, while a major line-out steal from Courtney Lawes kept them within striking distance. The turning point came when a powerful rolling maul drove the Harlequins defense back 30 meters. Riley illegally pulled the ball down close to the line, prompting referee Christophe Ridley to award a penalty try and send the hooker to the sin bin.
With the lead established, Harlequins were unable to mount a late recovery. They will now look to the Challenge Cup next week, hoping a home fixture against Vannes brings a change in their seasonal fortunes.
