During a post-round press conference following his remarkable 54-hole lead at The Open, Sam Burns expressed his surprise at competing in the prestigious Major tournament. Burns initially anticipated missing the event due to personal commitments, but a series of unforeseen circumstances altered his plans.
Burns’s wife, Caroline, delivered their second child, daughter Belle, a week prior to the tournament. The baby’s arrival was earlier than anticipated, prompting Burns to reassess his schedule and consider participating in The Open.
“The golf tournament was genuinely beyond my initial considerations and expectations for participation,” Burns remarked. His son’s birth, which occurred four days past the expected due date, further contributed to this unexpected decision.
“This golf tournament was honestly so far off my radar and expectations of playing,” Burns reflected. “Caroline’s due date was Tuesday this week. She was four days late with our son. I just didn’t think there was any possible way.” He added that even after the birth, he did not initially consider the tournament, as Caroline had encouraged him to prioritize his professional commitments.
“Even after she was born, after a couple of days, I wasn’t thinking much about it. Caroline was kind of like, ‘so what are you thinking for next week?’ Burns recalled. His wife’s gentle nudging led him to evaluate his options, ultimately encouraging him to attend and compete.
“I said, ‘I don’t know, should we talk about it?’ he admitted. However, his wife’s confidence in his ability to manage both family and professional obligations proved pivotal. His final decision to participate in The Open was a testament to their shared commitment to supporting each other’s pursuits.
“Ultimately she’s the one that really encouraged me to come over and play. She basically said, ‘I’ve got this at home, go over there and give it your best,’ and here we are,” Burns concluded, reflecting on the inspiring support he received from his wife during this unexpected opportunity.
