India have announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with the tour beginning on July 23 at the Harare Sports Club. The selection panel has chosen a refreshed lineup, making several changes to the group currently contesting the T20I series against England. Shreyas Iyer retains the captaincy, with Tilak Varma as his deputy, but the headline omission is Sanju Samson, who is left out despite his starring role in India’s triumphant T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. All three fixtures will be staged in Harare as India seek to further broaden squad depth ahead of a packed international schedule.
No place for Sanju Samson, Axar Patel and other stars
The most startling call is undoubtedly the exclusion of Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament in India’s successful T20 World Cup 2026 run. The wicketkeeper-batter was instrumental throughout the event, making his omission a major talking point before the Zimbabwe series.
The BCCI has offered no reason for Samson’s absence, prompting speculation among fans and pundits. He is not the only established name to be left out, as seasoned all-rounder Axar Patel has also been excluded.
Several other regulars from the current T20I setup are absent as well. Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna are among those missing, though the board has not confirmed whether workload, injury or tactical factors drove the decisions. Their absence has created room for newcomers and returning players, underlining India’s push to widen its T20 talent base.
Rinku Singh returns, Prabhsimran Singh among fresh additions
A key positive from the announcement is the return of Rinku Singh, who rejoins India’s T20I plans after missing recent assignments. Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh has also been recalled on the back of consistent IPL form over the last two seasons. Prabhsimran scored 579 runs in the 2025 IPL and followed with 510 runs in 14 matches in 2026 at an average of 42.50 and a strike rate of 168.87. With Ishan Kishan already in the squad, Prabhsimran is set to serve as reserve wicketkeeper.
Domestic performers Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur have earned maiden international call-ups. Both pacers excelled in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Ashok taking 22 wickets and Thakur 18 in just seven matches at an average of 9.88. Ashok also impressed on his IPL debut for Gujarat Titans, bowling the tournament’s fastest ball at 154.2 kph.
Fast bowler Mayank Yadav returns to the national side after an injury-affected spell, while Harsh Dubey, who made his ODI debut against Afghanistan earlier this year, receives his first T20I call-up.
Familiar faces set to lead India in Zimbabwe
Despite the changes, the leadership core remains. Iyer will captain, with Tilak as vice-captain. Young batting talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi keeps his place after promising recent showings, while Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Kishan and Varun Chakaravarthy also stay in the squad.
India will hope the mix of experience and fresh talent delivers another strong overseas showing against Zimbabwe in Harare later this month.
