A NASA satellite captured large expanses of open water merely 37 miles (60 km) from the North Pole on 29 August. While this observation does not automatically indicate that Arctic ice conditions are poorer this year compared with recent years, scientists note that it underscores the profound impact of climate change on the region.

The image, sourced from NASA’s Worldview satellite browsing platform, was posted last week on the Arctic News blog. Describing the patches as “quite striking,” Professor Julienne Stroeve of University College London’s polar observation and modeling group pointed out that such encroachment of open water near the pole has occurred before.
