After a 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, the national team coach raised serious questions about his future and left the post-match press conference in tears.
In the media room at MetLife Stadium, Scaloni struck a measured and introspective tone when asked about his plans. “Regarding myself, I am going to speak with the president. I will fulfill my contract and then see. I feel the need to think things over because I don’t know if it’s possible to achieve something this great ever again,” he said before being overcome by emotion.
With tears visible and his words faltering, Scaloni looked back on his successful tenure in what resembled a goodbye to the country. “We tried until the very last moment to give our absolute maximum—both the coaching staff and the players. I think it is only fair that I can take this time to think it over. This place is wonderful. It is a dream destination… one that in our lives, all the guys on the coaching staff and I, never imagined being in,” he told reporters.
“To keep going requires a whole host of things: resetting yourself completely, building a group like this all over again… which will be hard to ever replicate. And it hurts me to my very soul,” he added, his voice breaking as he stood and walked out, crying.

Scaloni’s contract situation and future
Scaloni first joined Argentina as interim coach after the team’s poor run at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Despite early doubts from supporters and analysts, he secured the permanent role and rebuilt the side, presiding over one of the most successful periods in the nation’s football history.
Originally appointed in late 2018, Scaloni’s deal expires in December 2026, covering two World Cup cycles. Although he had earlier indicated willingness to remain through 2030, his emotional remarks on Sunday have cast doubt on whether he will continue.
