Scottie Scheffler’s Unmatched Dominance in Home Money Matches Highlights Competitive Edge

Since 2022, Scottie Scheffler has maintained a sustained period of excellence rarely witnessed in golf history. For nearly four seasons, he has remained the world’s top-ranked player according to the Official World Golf Ranking.

His inaugural PGA Tour victory came at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, and he has since added 20 more tournament wins, including four major championships.

While Scheffler often showcases his skills on the sport’s grandest stages, his performance may be even more commanding when competing at home in Dallas, Texas.

Gary Woodland on Scheffler’s dominance: ‘I’ve never beaten Scottie in Dallas’

Known as both a golf enthusiast and competitive spirit, Scheffler regularly engages in money matches with fellow Dallas-based professionals at Royal Oaks Country Club. Participants including Si Woo Kim, Gary Woodland, and Ryder Cup representative Sam Burns frequently serve as his opponents.

His influence extends beyond the course, having facilitated Kim’s membership at Royal Oaks. Scheffler recounted this story at the recent BMW Championship.

“Si Woo stopped me in the locker room and asked if I could help him join Royal Oaks,” Scheffler explained. “I was like, ‘Yeah, of course.’ And by the way, it’s Royal Oaks by the way.”

The two developed into consistent practice partners and frequent rivals in informal competitions. Scheffler highlighted Kim’s appeal in the professional environment, describing him as a popular figure who enjoys competing and is pleasant to be around.

“He’s really fun to be around. He likes playing, he likes to go out and compete,” Scheffler noted. “It’s great to have that element of competition right here in Dallas. He’s really popular in the locker room.”

Though Scheffler acknowledged playing money matches with Kim at Royal Oaks, he declined to confirm never having lost to his friend at home.

“I’ll let him answer,” Scheffler said when questioned about his winless record against Kim.

During the Tour Championship, Kim playfully admitted to significant financial losses, joking that he might be “paying for his second son, all the diapers.” Meanwhile, Woodland provided more detailed insights into their competitive dynamic at the championship’s Tuesday press conference.

The 2019 U.S. Open winner confirmed that while Kim faces scrutiny for his consistent losses to Scheffler, Woodland revealed he has never personally defeated Scheffler in a money match within their hometown.

“I’ve never beaten Scottie in Dallas,” Woodland affirmed. “He asked me if I just hand him money every time he sees me. Fortunately, that’s been the case.”

Woodland went on to describe Scheffler’s intimidating performance, recounting a particular instance where Scheffler “parred the last three holes and shot 60 one day” during a practice session prior to the PGA Tour’s Memphis stop.

“Si Woo and I didn’t fare as well that day,” Woodland added. “We play $100 per hole, and Si Woo and I like to press sometimes, but that doesn’t work out well either. I’ve had to go to the ATM a couple times playing him in Dallas. Trust me, I’m surprised he hasn’t said it. He likes to remind me of it.”
