On Monday, June 29, the Seattle Kraken signed forwards Lleyton Roed and J.R. Avon to one‑year NHL contracts worth $850,000 each.
Roed, an undrafted free agent, joined the Coachella Valley Firebirds—the Kraken’s AHL affiliate—after a strong collegiate season in 2023‑24, where he posted 30 points in 38 games for Bemidji State University. He appeared in five regular‑season games for the Firebirds this year, tallying a goal and an assist, and added another goal in five postseason contests.
The 2024‑25 campaign marked Roed’s first full AHL season. He featured in 56 games, recording 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points, a promising offensive start to his pro career.
In 2025‑26, Roed again played a full schedule, improving to 38 points in 65 games—a career high. He also contributed seven assists in 12 playoff games.
Although Roed has yet to debut with the Kraken at the NHL level, his development in the AHL positions him as an emerging offensive threat.
Avon has spent the past three seasons in the AHL, most recently with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, where he posted 18 points in 65 games during the 2023‑24 season and 17 points in 60 games the following year.
Ahead of the 2025‑26 season, the Kraken acquired Avon in a trade for Tucker Robertson. He logged 45 games with the Firebirds, notching a career‑best 24 points, and added eight points (seven goals, one assist) in 12 postseason appearances.
Avon’s contributions have been valuable to the Firebirds, and his re‑signing signals continued growth within the Kraken organization.
Both Roed and Avon are integral to the Kraken’s future offensive depth. While they await their first NHL ice time, they are expected to remain key contributors for the Firebirds in the 2026‑27 season.
