Mohammed Shami took centre stage during Bengal’s opening Ranji Trophy encounter against Delhi at Kalyani on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The veteran fast bowler produced a masterclass in discipline, claiming four wickets for 30 runs across 17.3 overs, including nine maidens, as Delhi were dismissed for 240 in their first innings.

Speaking after the match, Shami addressed the recent selection of fellow pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for India’s T20I tour of New Zealand. Bhuvneshwar, also 36, earned the call-up following a strong showing in the Indian Premier League. Shami welcomed the decision but questioned why it had taken so long, stressing that sustained domestic and league form warrants timely recognition.

“Bhuvi should have been picked a long time ago. He doesn’t talk to anyone. He is not like that.” Shami was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

“It doesn’t mean that you should stop a talent for a long time. It’s good for him. He has delivered back-to-back performances in the IPL, so he deserves it,” he added.

Why Bhuvneshwar deserved earlier selection

Shami’s remarks highlighted Bhuvneshwar’s consistent IPL performances, which ultimately forced his return to the national setup after a spell on the sidelines. The senior bowler underscored the importance of rewarding talent when it consistently delivers at the domestic and franchise levels.

Bengal’s pace battery also features Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar and Ishan Porel, giving the side one of the most formidable fast-bowling units in the competition. Shami pointed to this depth when discussing the pitch on offer at Kalyani.

Bengal’s pace strength and pitch concerns

Reflecting on the surface, Shami expressed frustration that the track did not complement the quality of his team’s attack. He felt a more responsive wicket was justified given the calibre of bowlers at Bengal’s disposal.

“The pitch was on the slower side. We didn’t expect it. There was a demand for a helpful wicket. Akash is playing, Mukesh is playing, I am playing. No team has this kind of pace bowling,” Shami said. “With this bowling, I don’t think we deserve this type of wicket,” he added.

Shami’s performance came amid his continued absence from the national side since the Champions Trophy triumph in early 2025. While he has remained active in domestic and league cricket, his commanding display against Delhi reinforced his fitness and enduring skill at the highest domestic level.
