Shreyas Iyer was recently asked to select current Indian players he would trust in some of the most memorable situations from India’s 2007 T20 World Cup triumph. During a light‑hearted segment, the batter matched members of the present squad with iconic moments from the inaugural tournament.
With India preparing to face West Indies in the opening T20I, Iyer was asked to make some tough selections, including who he would trust for the bowl‑out against Pakistan, the final over of the championship and Yuvraj Singh’s famous six‑sixes moment.
Shreyas Iyer backs Jasprit Bumrah for final over duty
When asked who he would trust to bowl the final over instead of Joginder Sharma in the 2007 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, Iyer chose Jasprit Bumrah. The India pace bowler also featured among his five selections for the iconic bowl‑out against Pakistan.
In addition to Bumrah, Iyer named Abhishek Sharma, himself, Ishan Kishan and Yash Thakur for the bowl‑out. He was then asked to replace other key figures from India’s title‑winning campaign. For Yuvraj Singh’s famous six‑sixes against Stuart Broad, Iyer selected Shivam Dube.
Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi and Tilak Varma get the nod
For Gautam Gambhir’s pivotal role in the final against Pakistan, Iyer backed Tilak Varma. He also selected Axar Patel to replicate Irfan Pathan’s crucial bowling performance during the tournament. Iyer chose Ravi Bishnoi to emulate Harbhajan Singh, who starred in India’s semi‑final win over Australia.
The choices sparked debate among fans on social media, with some supporting Iyer’s selection of Bumrah for the final over while others questioned several of his picks. The segment formed part of Star Sports’ build‑up to India’s first T20I against West Indies, providing a fun hypothetical look at how Iyer would recreate defining moments from India’s historic 2007 campaign with today’s squad.
