KARACHI: The Sindh government has earmarked Rs108.1 billion for a sweeping set of development schemes across Karachi in the FY 2026‑27 budget.
The allocations cover infrastructure, transport, water and sanitation, health, education and other key sectors.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the city’s development was a top priority in his budget speech to the Sindh Assembly.
Under the “Mega Project for Karachi City” head, the budget assigns Rs420 million for a flyover linking Airport Road to Star Gate, Rs525 million for a right‑turn underpass from Malir Halt to Sharea Faisal, and Rs825 million for a flyover at Sir Shah Suleman Road over Gujjar Nullah.
Two underpasses in DHA – Khayaban‑i‑Shahbaz and Khayaban‑i‑Ittehad – each receive Rs1 billion, with a combined project cost exceeding Rs2.8 billion.
Funding is also set aside for ongoing mega‑projects such as the Shahrah‑i‑Bhutto‑Korangi Causeway junction, the Azeempura flyover, and new interchanges linked to the Malir Expressway.
For water and sanitation, Rs1 billion is allocated to the Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan (S‑III), Rs575.6 million to K‑IV augmentation, and additional funds to upgrade water pumping stations in the city’s East and Central districts, rehabilitate the trunk‑main network, and lay a new supply line along the Lyari Expressway.
In transport, more than Rs3.5 billion is designated for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Yellow Line corridor, while the BRT Red Line receives Rs697 million.
Rs10 million is allocated for constructing six modern garbage‑transfer stations, a project pending since 2015, and an equal amount for upgrading two landfill sites in Jam Chakro and Gond Pass.
Additional funding supports the establishment of a Provincial Civil Services Academy (Rs1 billion), a new Sindh Revenue Board training academy and office complex, and improvements to commercial centres and markets throughout the city.
816 Karachi schemes
The chief minister noted that Karachi’s development portfolio comprises 816 schemes with a total estimated cost of Rs644.3 billion.
“For the upcoming fiscal year, Rs100.19 billion has been earmarked for Karachi‑based projects, while overall allocations for 822 schemes, including citywide initiatives, total Rs108.1 billion,” he said.
Currently, 167 projects costing more than Rs500 million each and 110 mega‑projects valued over Rs1 billion are under implementation across the metropolis.
Investments in roads, public transport, water supply, education, healthcare and municipal services aim to address Karachi’s long‑standing infrastructure challenges.
