TOKYO — Japanese electronics and entertainment company Sony announced Thursday that its profit for the July‑September quarter rose 44%, driven largely by the box‑office success of its film “Spider‑Man: Brand New Day.”

Sony Group Corp. posted quarterly profit of 449.6 billion yen (US$2.8 billion), a 44% increase from roughly 311 billion yen in the comparable period a year earlier, while quarterly sales rose 10% to 3.4 trillion yen.

In addition to the hit film, sustained strong demand for Sony’s PlayStation consoles contributed to the company’s improved earnings.

The company shipped 2.6 million PlayStation 5 units in the second quarter, down from 4 million a year earlier; the console launched in 2020 and sales typically wane over time.

Like many technology firms, Sony is confronting a shortage of computer chips driven by the surge in artificial intelligence.

However, like other major Japanese exporters, Sony has benefited from the weak yen, which enhances the yen value of its overseas earnings.

The U.S. dollar is currently trading around 158 yen, up from roughly 154 yen a year ago.

Across its business segments, Sony reported higher operating profit and sales in its games, music, and pictures divisions for the latest quarter.

Sony, known for products such as the Walkman, Xperia smartphones, and Bravia TVs, increased its full‑year profit forecast to 1.3 trillion yen for the fiscal year ending March 2027, up from the previous 1.2 trillion yen estimate.

This projection represents a step up from Sony’s 1 trillion yen net profit in the prior fiscal year.

Sony’s shares rose 7% in Tokyo trading just before the release of its financial results.
