JOHANNESBURG — South African authorities have detained five suspects in connection with a violent farm robbery in the North West province that left a 50-year-old farmer critically injured after being shot and mutilated.
The suspects, ranging in age from 26 to 56, are scheduled to appear before the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday facing charges of house robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, according to police spokesperson Col. Adele Myburgh.
Police initially apprehended two individuals before arresting three additional suspects on Sunday near Potchefstroom, approximately 120 kilometers (74 miles) west-southwest of Johannesburg. Officers recovered four firearms — two linked to the attack — along with clothing and jewelry.
The assault occurred on October 28 at a farm in Syferfontein, near Ventersdorp. Three armed men wearing balaclavas confronted a farmworker mowing the lawn, demanding the owner’s whereabouts before binding his hands and feet with cable ties.
When the farmer arrived, the attackers shot him in the upper body, dragged him inside, bound him, and subjected him to further stabbing and assault. They stole three firearms from a safe and fled in the farmer’s pickup truck.
The farmworker managed to free himself and summon help. The farmer was hospitalized in serious condition.
The Moral Regeneration Movement, a civil society organization, identified the victim as Donovan Marx and confirmed Monday that he was recovering in hospital.
Farm attacks affect Black and white farmers, workers, and residents alike. Research by the Institute for Security Studies indicates robbery is the predominant motive and has found no evidence of an organized campaign targeting white farmers or a “white genocide,” as claimed by the Trump administration.
“Any attack on farmers represents a serious threat to food security,” said Pastor Lesiba Kgwele, the movement’s provincial convenor.
Kgwele called for increased police visibility in farming communities and warned against exploiting crime to fuel racial hatred and division.
