The creators of the animated series South Park have revealed that its upcoming season will be titled South America, a move widely interpreted as a jab at President Donald Trump’s efforts to rename a lake and a gulf.
“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to South America,” stated creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker in a formal statement.
In August, Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, following his declaration last year that the Gulf of Mexico should be known as the Gulf of America.
This announcement, coming from the show’s 29th season, follows its recent victory at the Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program.
The official name change, shared on the show’s social media accounts, featured an image of the South Park sign with the word “Park” replaced by “America”.
“We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount—a Skydance Capitulation,” the creators noted in the post.
Paramount Skydance is the show’s parent company. The Trump administration approved a $111 billion merger with Warner Bros Discovery this year, marking one of the largest media deals in history.
However, the merger has been paused until June 2027 after 12 US states filed lawsuits against the deal, fearing it would harm market competition and lead to higher consumer prices.
The day before the show’s announcement, Trump shared an AI-generated video showing him placing the word “America” over “Mexico” on a “Welcome to New Mexico” sign.
In August, amid escalating trade tensions between the US and Canada, Trump ordered a similar change for Lake Ontario, renaming it Lake America.
Apple and Google subsequently updated their respective Maps apps to reflect the name change for US-based users.
Last year, Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed as the Gulf of America. Mexico has rejected the change, arguing that a single country cannot rename a shared body of international water.
Running since 1997, South Park has regularly mocked the US president across his two terms in office.
Both creators, Stone and Parker, have repeatedly drawn criticism from Trump, the White House, and MAGA supporters for the show’s jabs at the president.
During its 27th season, the White House described South Park as a “fourth-rate” show “hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention” after an episode depicted Trump naked in bed with Satan.
Following its Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program, the show shared an image depicting a fictionalized Donald Trump with the caption: “You finally got your Emmy.”
The new season of South Park is set to premiere on September 16.
