Southampton Women Face Major Budget Cuts and Relocation, but Club Denies Spygate Connection

Southampton Women’s Super League 2 side has experienced significant budget reductions following a “challenging” summer, head coach Simon Parker has confirmed.

As part of operational adjustments, the women’s team will play the majority of their home matches this season at Eastleigh FC’s Silverlake Stadium, moving away from St Mary’s Stadium, where they have played for the past four seasons. With the new campaign set to begin, Parker explained to BBC Radio Solent that the club is now operating with the smallest budget in WSL 2, which will heavily influence their strategic planning for the upcoming season. “The summer has been a bit challenging with a few of the things that have happened,” Parker commented.

Sources close to the club have denied any connection between these budget cuts and the recent “Spygate” scandal. The Southampton men’s team was previously excluded from the Championship play-offs after admitting to spying on rival sides, and started the current season with a points penalty.

Despite these setbacks, the women’s team enjoyed a strong 2025-26 campaign, securing fifth place in the league—their highest finish in the football pyramid since reforming nine years ago. Parker noted that while the initial goal was to finish in the top half and push for promotion, the team’s fifth-place finish exceeded expectations. “It was a strong first year last season where the aim was always to try and finish in the top half, and finishing fifth in a promotion push for a large part of the season was really promising,” Parker added. “Off the back of last season, the plan was to re-engage with a lot of our key players, but we had to pivot and go into a different direction.”

The restructuring comes as director of football Marieanne Spacey-Cale also announced her departure earlier this summer, following her pivotal role in the development and growth of the women’s team at Southampton.
