The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Wednesday that all 24 Copa del Rey first‑round matches originally slated for today have been postponed in response to a devastating train crash in central Spain. The accident, which involved a high‑speed train colliding with a stationary train, has claimed at least 30 lives and left approximately 80 people injured.
“Shocked by the tragic train accident,” the RFEF said, adding that the decision to postpone the games was made “in solidarity with the victims and their families.” The federation emphasized that the entire football community stands united in grief and is ready to assist the authorities in the aftermath.
Among the fixtures cancelled were Navalcarnero versus Real Betis, Salamanca versus Celta Vigo and Tavernes versus Valencia, among others. The RFEF indicated that a revised schedule will be released once the situation stabilises. Matches scheduled for Tuesday were played without disruption, and the upcoming Thursday first‑round games remain unchanged. The top-tier league has not announced any postponements for weekend fixtures.
Several clubs issued statements of condolence. FC Barcelona posted on social media: “The club wishes to convey its support and solidarity to the families and friends of the victims and to wish all those injured a speedy recovery.” Real Madrid similarly expressed its condolences, noting that the club shares “in the grief of everyone impacted during these moments of profound sadness.”
Sevilla FC observed a moment of silence before training on Wednesday and cancelled its scheduled manager press conference ahead of the match against Sporting de Hortaleza.
