Key Facts
In a statement on Tuesday, the Angels announced Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, the company owned by the billionaire, entered a “definitive agreement” to purchase a controlling interest in the MLB team from the Moreno family.
The deal, whose value was not immediately disclosed, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, according to the team.
“We believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise,” Moreno said in a statement on Tuesday, four years after he first explored selling the team.
Kroenke called the Angels, who are tied for last in their division this year with 53 wins and 85 losses, a “storied franchise anchored in a great market,” and promised an “exciting future” for the team.
Kroenke Sports & Entertainment now owns one team in each of the four major American sports leagues: the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL, the Denver Nuggets in the NBA and the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL.
Kroenke also owns English Premier League champion Arsenal F.C., Arsenal Women F.C., the MLS’s Colorado Rapids and the Colorado Mammoth, a professional lacrosse team.
Big Number
$2.8 billion. That’s how much Forbes values the Los Angeles Angels, as of March 2026. Moreno purchased the team from its previous owners, the Walt Disney Company, in 2003 for $183.5 million.
Forbes Valuation
We estimate Kroenke’s net worth at $24.3 billion, a fortune he made primarily through commercial real estate and entertainment venues. Kroenke, 78, was ranked the 12th-wealthiest sports owner in the world earlier this year. He is also the largest private land owner in the United States, the New York Times reported in January citing data from Land Report. Kroenke owns an estimated 2.7 million acres, including ranch land and 60 million square feet of commercial real estate. Moreno, 80, is worth an estimated $5 billion, which he primarily made through billboard company Outdoor Systems.
Key Background
Moreno purchased the Anaheim Angels in 2003, just after the team won its only World Series in 2002. Under his ownership, the team changed its name to the “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim,” then just the “Los Angeles Angels” in 2015. The Angels won their division six times since Moreno took over, but have largely disappointed since their last playoff appearance in 2014. The Angels hold the longest active playoff drought in the MLB, and are effectively certain to miss the playoffs again this year. The team signed Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani for his first American contract in 2017, but still missed the playoffs all five seasons he was with the team. Ohtani signed a $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, who have since won two World Series titles. Moreno previously explored selling the team in 2022 after the city of Anaheim voided a plan to sell him the team’s stadium for $325 million. However, he said one year later he decided against selling the team.
