Stephen Fleming has stepped down as head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), concluding a distinguished stint in which the franchise secured five IPL championships and two Champions League T20 titles.

The CSK franchise announced on Monday that the separation was mutual, stating it “brings to a close one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in IPL history.” The decision followed candid discussions between Fleming and the Kings’ management, made with respect and gratitude.

Fleming also concluded his roles with the Super Kings’ sister franchises—Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 and Texas Super Kings in the MLC—where he served as head coach. The announcement came just hours after Texas Super Kings finished at the bottom of the MLC 2026 standings, while Joburg Super Kings failed to reach a SA20 final in four seasons.

“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude,” Fleming said in a statement. “My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved. Together we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will continue to cheer the team on for years to come.”

Fleming first joined CSK as a player ahead of IPL 2008 and assumed the head-coaching role the following season. He forged a strong working relationship with MS Dhoni, guiding the team to a record 12 playoff appearances and ten final appearances, capturing titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Under his leadership CSK also lifted the Champions League trophy in 2010 and 2014.

“Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for virtually the entire history of this franchise,” said CSK owner Rupa Gurunath. “For nearly two decades he has helped shape our identity, vision, and relentless pursuit of excellence. While our on‑field collaboration ends here, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”

KS Viswanathan, CEO of CSK, praised Fleming for helping “build a culture rooted in consistency, humility and putting the team first,” adding that his ability to understand people and bring out the best in individuals across the squad has been one of his greatest strengths. “His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together,” Viswanathan said.

CSK’s back‑to‑back triumphs in IPL 2010 and 2011, their title win in 2018 after a two‑year suspension, and their 2023 victory—achieved after Dhoni took over the captaincy from Ravindra Jadeja midway through the previous season—stand out as highlights of Fleming’s tenure.

The franchise has not yet announced any plans concerning the future of its other support staff, including batting coach Mike Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons.
