Steve Yzerman’s tenure as general manager of the Detroit Red Wings has concluded, with the team announcing his transition to a senior advisor role under CEO Chris Ilitch.
Yzerman’s seven-year leadership, dubbed the “Yzerplan,” failed to deliver the franchise-changing results it promised. Beyond Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, Detroit struggled to develop top-tier talent, missed the playoffs entirely, and finished with the league’s fifth-worst points percentage during his tenure. The team’s prolonged struggles were compounded by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding captain Dylan Larkin, whose trade request has become a focal point of the rebuild.
Since 2019, Detroit has lagged behind teams like Columbus, Arizona/Utah, and Seattle in the standings. The Larkin situation ultimately forced change, as the captain—who has five years remaining on a cost-effective deal—rejected the team’s direction. A hometown hero, Larkin’s disillusionment with Yzerman’s roster construction and frequent coaching turnover highlighted the disconnect between the franchise’s vision and its reality.
While some critics point to draft lottery misfortunes as a contributing factor, the Red Wings’ consistent mediocrity under Yzerman’s leadership left little room for optimism. His departure, while framed as a “transition,” underscores the need for a fresh strategy to revitalize the organization.
The trade request from Larkin, whose contract was negotiated by Yzerman, reflects growing frustration among core players. Reports suggest the former GM sought roster upgrades to address the captain’s concerns but found no viable options to bridge the gap toward playoff contention. Moving forward, Detroit faces a critical offseason, with Larkin likely to be traded for future assets, extending the rebuild further. The incoming general manager will also evaluate veterans like Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp, Mason Appleton, and Justin Faulk, whose contract situations complicate the team’s future plans.
