June 27 (Reuters) – A powerful earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Saturday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported, with tremors reaching as far as Kabul and spilling into northern Pakistan.
In Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, residents in the Swat district fled their homes in panic, says local resident Daniyal Ahmad. “The shaking was intense and lasted for a long time,” he told Reuters, adding that crowds emerged from houses, with women and children visibly distressed.
The fault released a magnitude‑6 seismic event at a depth of approximately 100 km (62 miles), the centre said.
Earlier that day, an independent magnitude‑5.4 earthquake also struck Pakistan, according to EMSC data.
