Walking through the once-lush greenery, an eerie silence prevails, broken only by birdsong and the mewing of hungry stray cats. Dozens of fire-damaged homes—simple one-storey buildings in Nir Oz—have been demolished, leaving only rows of reinforced concrete safe rooms that tragically failed to protect residents.
The Aharons advocate preserving some damaged homes as evidence of the atrocities committed. “We fully support this,” Achi states. “People need to witness what occurred—the destruction, the sheer hatred displayed here.”
The couple indicate where teacher Maya Goren was killed in the kindergarten and where makeshift memorials honor three of seven kibbutz security members who died confronting Hamas gunmen.
Israeli Defense Forces investigation findings highlighted how the military, thrown into disarray by the unprecedented simultaneous assault on over 20 communities and multiple military posts, completely failed to rescue Nir Oz residents.
On October 7, the first soldiers arrived at the kibbutz approximately 40 minutes after the last Palestinian attackers departed. Nearly every household suffered killings, violence including sexual assaults and rape, looting, and kidnappings.
Dalit pauses to show me a tree planted decades ago by her parents, kibbutz co-founders known for their farming legacy and peace activism. They survived the October 7 attacks physically unscathed but died just months later.
Next door is the small home of Shiri Bibas, mother of red-haired boys Ariel, four, and nine-month-old Kfir. The three, abducted from their home, became symbols of the Gaza hostage crisis.
“This is the hardest house for me,” Dalit confides. “Shiri was an exceptional friend—like a sister. We even became pregnant around the same time—me with my daughter and her with Ariel. Our children became best friends. We would joke they’d marry someday.”
