Switzerland may not have contested a trophy lift, but the Nati have consistently represented Europe in the World Cup, maintaining a reliable if unpredictable presence on the global stage.
With the upcoming 2026 tournament—jointly hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States—Switzerland has competed in 13 World Cups, missing 10 editions. Their longest drought stretched from 1970 to 1990, a period during which they failed to qualify for six consecutive tournaments.
The most recent challenge for Switzerland has been the knockout round. After progressing from the group stages in 1994, 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022, they were eliminated in the first knockout stage each time. Having topped Group B and preserved an unbeaten record through the next group stage, the Nati now aim to break this cycle.
Peak World Cup Performances by Switzerland
Despite recent setbacks in the knockout phase, Switzerland has reached the quarterfinals on three occasions, marking its all‑time best result in the tournament.

The first quarterfinal appearance came during Switzerland’s debut at the 1934 tournament in Italy, where they beat the Netherlands 3–2 before falling 3–2 to eventual runners‑up Czechoslovakia in the quarterfinals. Four years later, in the 1938 French tournament, their campaign again concluded in the quarterfinals, losing 2–0 to Hungary—who advanced to the final.
The third quarterfinal appearance occurred on home soil during the 1954 tournament, when Switzerland were the host nation. That edition produced the competition’s highest-scoring match, in which the Swiss participated.
In that quarterfinal against Austria, intense heat saw Switzerland build a 3–0 lead within 19 minutes, only for Austria to reverse the result. The Austrians mounted a comeback and won a dramatic 7–5 encounter—the highest‑scoring match in World Cup history—while leaving the Swiss with one of their most painful exits.
Switzerland’s Overall World Cup Record
With 13 World Cup appearances, Switzerland has reached the quarterfinals three times—its best‑ever finish. Consistent performances in the group stage have earned the nation 17th place on the all‑time points leaderboard, with a cumulative 50 points.
Excluding the ongoing 2026 campaign, Switzerland has contested 41 World Cup matches, securing 13 wins, 9 draws, and 19 losses—a win rate of 40.65%. The team has scored 55 goals and conceded 73, a record they aim to surpass as the tournament advances.
