TDK Corporation is introducing sensor‑equipped javelins for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, enabling real‑time capture and analysis of the physics of each throw.
As the official global partner, TDK will equip the javelins with its sensors for a special demonstration during the event in Budapest, scheduled from 11 to 13 September, featuring top‑level athletes.
The system records metrics beyond the traditional distance measure, including release angle, rotation, speed, altitude and flight trajectory.
TDK’s software processes the data instantly, generating real‑time visualisations for athletes and spectators to better understand technique and the mechanics of elite throws.
Building on its long‑standing partnership with World Athletics, which began with the Tokyo 2025 Championships, TDK is extending sensor technology to make previously hidden javelin data readily accessible.
Recent upgrades to the sensor hardware and software now allow immediate analysis and visualisation of javelin motion, unlocking new applications in athlete training, performance assessment, and fan engagement.
The Budapest demonstration
The special Smart Javelin presentation is scheduled for Friday, 11 September 2026, from 09:00 to 13:00 local time, at the training and warm‑up area of the Gyula Zsivotzky National Athletics Centre.
International-level athletes are expected to take part in the demonstration, including:
- Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage (Sri Lanka), world No.1 in the men’s javelin rankings for 2026.
- Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago), 2025 world champion, 2012 Olympic gold medallist and 2016 bronze medallist.
- Haruka Kitaguchi (Japan), 2024 Olympic gold medallist, 2023 world champion and holder of the Japanese record. Kitaguchi will take part in the discussion on sensor technology but will not throw.
- Máté Horváth (Hungary), Hungarian champion in 2025 and European U18 silver medallist in 2022.
- Fanni Kövér (Hungary), Hungarian champion in 2024 and European U20 bronze medallist in 2023.
- Máté Járvás (Hungary), Hungarian bronze medallist in 2026.
From sensors to sports analytics
The project aligns with TDK’s long‑term “TDK Transformation” vision and its “In Everything, Better” philosophy. Through the “TDK Sensing Within” initiative, the company seeks to embed sensor technology across diverse product lines and solutions, collaborating with external partners.
TDK has been an official World Athletics partner since 1983, and recent collaborations have leveraged sensor data to provide deeper insights into athlete performance.
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is a biennial global competition that unites world and Olympic champions, Wanda Diamond League winners, and top‑ranked athletes.
The inaugural event will be held in Budapest from 11–13 September, offering a $10 million prize pool (approximately €8.6 million).
