After Tennessee attempted and failed to execute Christa Pike by lethal injection on Wednesday, Governor Bill Lee announced that executions in the state would be temporarily suspended while an investigation into the incident unfolds.
This week, Tennessee embodied two contrasting philosophies regarding capital punishment. Initially, the state moved forward with carrying out an execution. When that effort was unsuccessful, it pivoted to becoming a jurisdiction that would not pursue executions for the foreseeable future.
