Texas A&M Defense Dominates in 48-20 Victory Over Arizona State

COLLEGE STATION — A dominant defensive performance fueled Texas A&M’s convincing 48-20 win over Arizona State Saturday at Kyle Field, as three fourth-quarter turnovers — including two interception returns for touchdowns — put the game well out of reach.

Defensive end Marco Jones recorded the first takeaway when fellow lineman T.J. Searcy pressured quarterback Cutter Boley, deflecting his throw into the air where Jones picked it off and sprinted downfield for an uncontested 55-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 38-20.

Then, after safety Dalton Brooks forced a fumble recovery that led to a field goal, cornerback Julio Humphrey battled through receiver Omarion Miller to intercept another Boley pass and return it 45 yards for a second pick-six touchdown.

The defense wasn’t the only unit delivering game-changing moments for the No. 10 Aggies (2-0). Special teams also played a crucial role, contributing 17 points across three key possessions.

The Aggies struck first in the opening quarter after Cory Butler Jr. muffed Tyler White’s booming punt, giving Texas A&M possession inside the 10-yard line. Rueben Owens crossed the goal line less than a minute later to set the tone.

With just 30 seconds remaining before halftime and the two-minute timeout, the Sun Devils (1-1) attempted a fake punt on 4th-and-1, directly snapping to James Giggey. The play broke down, and Texas A&M took over at the Arizona State 42, leading to a David Olano field goal and a 17-10 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Terry Bussey fielded Nick McLarty’s punt at the 35 and raced upfield for 21 yards, giving the Aggies another possession in Sun Devil territory.

Quarterback Marcel Reed — who finished with three touchdowns, an interception, and 163 passing yards — made the most of the opportunity, connecting with Mario Craver on a 33-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 31-20.

Special teams weren’t flawless for the Aggies, however, as White fumbled a punt attempt in the fourth quarter, affording Arizona State its best field position of the game.

But the Texas A&M defense answered immediately with Jones’s interception.

Texas A&M heads into its SEC opener at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday against Kentucky.
