The Laughing Cow has traded its familiar smile for a serious expression on select packages of its Creamy Original cheese wedges, prompting shoppers to wonder what happened to the brand’s longtime mascot.

For the first time in more than a century, the red cow known for her cheerful grin is appearing with a somber face as part of a new campaign called “The Not Laughing Cow.”

Bel Brands told Fox News Digital that the frown is temporary and that the company plans to reveal more about the campaign in the coming days.

“The Laughing Cow has spent more than 100 years reminding us not to take life too seriously. So when she suddenly gets serious, you pay attention,” Jamee Pearlstein, chief marketing officer of Bel Brands USA, U.S. Cheese, said in a news release.

“Whatever finally got to her must be worth talking about. We’ll let her explain when she’s ready,” Pearlstein added.

The updated packaging features the stone-faced cow alongside a QR code and the message, “We need to talk.” Scanning the code directs shoppers to TheNotLaughingCow.com, where the brand is encouraging fans to speculate about the reason for the mascot’s sudden mood shift.

Videos on the campaign website continue the mystery, showing the usually upbeat mascot looking subdued and isolated. In one scene, she sits alone at a diner counter. Another shows her quietly swinging by herself as the phrases “The Laughing Cow stopped laughing” and “We need to talk” appear on screen.

The serious-faced mascot has also been featured in public settings such as parks and diners, as well as across the brand’s social media accounts.

According to the company, shoppers began asking about the change before the brand officially addressed it, with fans reaching out to find out why The Laughing Cow had stopped smiling.

“We’ve been excited to see that curiosity and conversation continue to build as more of The Not Laughing Cow packages appear on shelves,” Bel Brands told Fox News Digital.

The limited-edition packages are available in select markets across the continental U.S. and can be found in more than 4,700 stores, the company said.

Bel Brands emphasized that the new expression is not a permanent change to the logo or packaging.

Once the brand explains why the mascot stopped laughing, the company expects her smile to return, along with the familiar joyful imagery shoppers have associated with The Laughing Cow for more than a century.

The temporary redesign represents a sharp departure from the optimistic image the brand has built since 1921, when the smiling mascot began encouraging consumers to look on the bright side of life.
