The captive National Assembly of Nicaragua, controlled by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, dismantled the nation’s democratic pretenses once more. By amending the constitution, the regime has solidified its illegitimate dynasty and indefinitely blocked the possibility of free and fair elections for Nicaraguans.
Governments that deny the fundamental rights of their people must not receive the same economic and political privileges as those dedicated to maintaining hemispheric peace and security. The United States calls upon international partners to halt routine operations with this oppressive regime immediately.
The Murillo-Ortega regime’s assault on democracy endangers the stability and prosperity of the entire hemisphere. The Trump Administration is steadfast in its commitment to identifying and executing measures to counter these human rights violations, including through international forums such as the Organization of American States. We continue to stand with the Nicaraguan people in their pursuit of self-determination.
