The Ultimate Summer Vacation Dress You’ll Want to Wear on Repeat

Do you ever pack a standout dress for a trip? While I sometimes stick to a suitcase full of everyday basics, seeing the photos from Alison’s recent family getaway reminded me of the sheer joy of a dedicated “vacation dress.”

1. Elegant Brown. Fun fact: did you know Magnetic Fields singer Stephin Merritt wears only brown? During an interview I conducted for New York Magazine, he noted that brown is incredibly practical: “Brown shows absolutely nothing. You’d have to spill some fuchsia paint.” I am loving Alison’s linen piece and this polka-dot midi—both are currently on sale.

2. Crisp White. This dress is a bit of a splurge, but the eyelet hem is stunning. It would be a perfect choice for a casual wedding. If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly, try these linen or lace-trimmed options.

3. A Burst of Red. Red is so striking during the summer, especially when contrasted against blue water or lush greenery. This easy silhouette reminds me of something Marianne would wear in Normal People. I am also loving this midi in cheesecloth.

4. Chic Leopard. My friend Frosso mentioned that leopard print is everywhere in Paris right now. Consider this a note! I would highly recommend this cotton midi or a breezy shirtdress.

5. Pretty Floral. Finally, how adorable is this mini dress? It has a lovely “wild garden” feel that I want to wear with flip-flops all summer long. Embroidered floral details are also a wonderful touch.
