Republican Senator Thom Tillis warned on Sunday that President Donald Trump’s diesel supply arrangement with Russia may be unlawful and could endanger American lives, contributing to a surge of bipartisan opposition following the president’s announcement earlier in the week.
Trump stated that Russia had consented to deliver diesel fuel to international markets, prompting his administration to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian energy designed to cut off revenue financing Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine.
“I do believe there’s a legitimate case for saying the president’s not following the law,” Tillis remarked. The North Carolina lawmaker is an influential Republican figure, though he will depart the Senate at the conclusion of his term in January.
Diesel costs, vital to agriculture, home heating, and transportation sectors, have climbed near record levels. The pricing spike could adversely affect Republican prospects in next month’s congressional elections, which will decide whether the party retains its narrow legislative majorities.
