Tom Cruise’s latest film, Digger, is projected to suffer a devastating loss of approximately $245 million (£185 million) at the global box office, industry analysts have warned. The satirical black comedy, which stars Cruise as the oil magnate Digger Rockwell, saw ticket sales plummet by roughly 60% during its second weekend in theaters.
With global box office earnings currently hovering around $35 million (£26 million), the film’s theatrical run is widely considered a major commercial disappointment. Analysts estimate that the production and marketing campaign cost Warner Bros. approximately $280 million (£211 million). At this rate, Digger is poised to go down in history as one of the most significant box office flops in Hollywood.
The film’s struggles present a stark contrast to the recent franchise successes of its star, Tom Cruise, who headlined the acclaimed Top Gun: Maverick and the latest installments of the Mission: Impossible series. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu—known for Birdman, Babel, and The Revenant—Digger was envisioned as a major awards-season contender.
According to trade publication Variety, the movie is expected to conclude its theatrical run with a worldwide total of only $50 million (£38 million). Industry calculations suggest that the film would require a massive $350 million (£264 million) to break even, factoring in theater cuts, marketing expenses, and the costs associated with an awards campaign. However, a Warner Bros. representative contested this estimate, stating that the actual break-even threshold was closer to $300 million (£227 million).
The release of Digger marks the final standalone film from Warner Bros. before its recent acquisition by Paramount.
