The other day, I was lounging in bed, watching back-to-back Good Hang With Amy Poehler episode clips, as one does. During her interview with Tom Holland, the British actor admitted something that made me laugh out loud…
For his upcoming movie Spiderman: Brand New DayHolland plays NYC-born-and-raised Peter Parker. But while rehearsing scenes, Holland kept getting stuck on a cultural difference. “In England, [when you order food] you say, ‘Please, may I have the burger with number two? Thank you so much, please. Thank you, thank you, thank you,'” says Holland. “And in America, it’s totally fine to be like, ‘I’ll have the number two,’ and just leave it at that…I would be doing scenes and my dialect coach would come in and be like ‘Stop saying ‘please.’ A kid from New York’s not going to be saying please if you’re asking for a burger.’
So, in the end, what did he do? Our dear Holland went against his UK grain and stuck to the script.
“You can see this moment in the movie where someone asks me for a coffee and I just go ‘Sure,'” laughs Tom. “And even through the suit, you can see that I’m like, My dad is going to be so disappointed in meeeee. ”
Honestly, I get it! As a 33-year-old, I still follow certain rules that my mother engrained into my very being. Here are a few:
* If I ever meet someone who greets me in Spanish, I must follow my hello with a How are you? (‘How are you?’), even though my Spanish is too limited to continue the conversation after that.
* Always hold the door open for the person walking behind you, even if that means standing there for 30 awkward second waiting for them.
* Brush your teeth AS SOON AS YOU WAKE UP. No ifs, ands, or buts.
