João Palhinha spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, delivering strong performances in the heart of midfield. The north London club held an option to make the arrangement permanent for a fee in the region of €30–35 million.
However, Tottenham have decided against exercising that clause. Having already invested heavily in midfield reinforcements this summer, the hierarchy no longer deems the Portugal international a priority, leaving Palhinha to assess his next move.
Negotiations with Spurs ‘100% dead in the water’
Speaking to CFBayernInsider, journalist Christian Falk confirmed: “It is true, talks with Tottenham over signing João Palhinha are 100% dead in the water. The player would also be keen to return to his native Portugal. Sporting CP are keen on him, but the problem is that Bayern want to make another sale, while the Portuguese side wish to secure a loan deal for the holding midfielder with a buy-option attached after a year.
“Bayern are firm: they want the money now. They had calculated that they would get €30–35m if Tottenham had triggered his buy clause. Spurs won’t do that now, so Bayern want to get this money elsewhere. So, a loan wouldn’t be the perfect solution for the club, which is why this is going to take some time.”
Return to Sporting CP a possibility
Palhinha has been heavily linked with a move back to his former club, Sporting CP. At this stage of his career, regular playing time is paramount, and a return to Portugal would suit all parties. With Tottenham now well-stocked in central midfield, walking away from the permanent deal represents sound squad management.
The focus for Spurs must now shift to bolstering the attacking unit before the window closes. A quality winger and a striker remain the priority positions to address.
