Trump Faces Loud Boos During World Cup Final Appearance

Although Spain is slated to be crowned the official winner of the 2026 World Cup, the match had two losers due to Donald Trump’s presence. During a brief appearance on the jumbotrons at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, fans of Argentina and Spain loudly booed the U.S. president, who is scheduled to present the trophy to the victorious team. The incident occurred just after Jennifer Hudson performed the national anthem.

He was also seen sitting beside Melania Trump in a box several times throughout the match.

This is not the first time Trump has faced jeers at a sporting event, and it likely won’t be the last. Aside from UFC bouts and PGA Tour stops, most major sporting venues have proven hostile toward him.

Trump’s involvement in the World Cup has also proved detrimental to the U.S. national team. After a controversial red card sidelined USMNT star Folarin Balogun ahead of a crucial round‑of‑16 clash against Belgium, Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to have the decision reversed.

Rather than boosting the U.S. chances, the decision unsettled the squad. The Americans delivered what may have been their poorest performance of the tournament, falling 4‑1 and exiting the round of 16.

Fans quickly likened Trump’s intervention to his controversial appearance at Game 4 of the NBA Finals, where the New York Knicks lost the sole game of their eventual 4‑1 series loss to the San Antonio Spurs—an event at which Trump was also booed.

Despite the boos, Trump still has something to anticipate: personally handing the World Cup trophy to the eventual champions. This would not be his first time presenting a soccer trophy; last summer he awarded the Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea FC in London. Players, including star Cole Palmer, appeared puzzled about his role, noting that the ceremony is not something they control.

National teams, however, present a different dynamic. Argentina’s President Javier Milei has positioned himself as an ideological ally of the Trump administration, speaking at various U.S. political events and even at Mar‑a‑Lago. Spain’s government maintains a cooler relationship with Trump, so it will be intriguing to see which side lifts the trophy—and how the crowd reacts when Trump presents it.
