President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has approved new fuel economy standards, effectively ending the Biden-era electric vehicle mandate.
“The previous administration cost American auto manufacturers billions, forced consumers into vehicles they did not want, and wasted billions on charging stations that were never built,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The president added that the new standards will “eliminate waste in American car manufacturing, resulting in lower prices and saving families thousands of dollars on new, safe vehicles—far superior to the environmentally unfocused models we were previously producing. Every major manufacturer, from General Motors to Ford to Stellantis, has reached out to me wanting to build here, and now they can!”
He stated that his administration is investing $100 billion in American automaking.

“Manufacturing plants are returning, and jobs are coming back to Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, South Carolina, and across the nation,” Trump said. “Thank you to our outstanding Secretaries of Transportation and Commerce, Sean Duffy and Howard Lutnick.”
The Biden administration’s Environmental Protection Agency had issued stricter fuel emissions standards in 2024, requiring automakers to produce more electric vehicles in the coming years.
Trump also terminated Biden’s electric vehicle tax credits last year through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Ford CEO Jim Farley praised Trump’s plan to lower fuel standards last year, calling it a “victory for affordability and common sense.”

“As the president noted, we will be able to offer greater affordability on our popular models and launch new vehicles built in America that are more affordable because of this regulatory change,” Farley told Fox & Friends in December.
Trump also signed a trio of congressional resolutions in June, ending California’s restrictive rules for diesel engines and mandates on electric vehicle sales, celebrating that his signature “will kill the California mandates forever.”

“Under the previous administration, the federal government gave left-wing radicals in California dictatorial control over the future of the entire auto industry nationwide and globally,” Trump said before signing the resolutions.
“They approved Governor Gavin ‘Newscum’s’ absurd plan to impose a 100% ban on new gas-powered cars within a short timeframe,” he stated. “Consider this: you can’t buy any car except an electric one, and California is suffering blackouts and brownouts. They don’t have enough electricity right now.”
