Us President Donald Trump is slated to discuss plans for demining the Strait of Hormuz with allies during next week’s Group of Seven summit in France, a senior U.S. administration official said on Saturday. The official, who remained anonymous in accordance with White House rules, noted that mediators believe an agreement to end the war is close.
Britain and France, both G7 members, have expressed interest in aiding the demining effort once hostilities cease.
The official added that Trump intends to meet with the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on the sidelines of the summit to talk about winding down the Iran conflict.
The summit begins on Monday.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said a deal aimed at ending the war was closer than ever before and should be finalised within 24 hours. Pakistan was preparing for an electronic signing of the agreement, to be followed by technical‑level talks next week.
In a social media post, Sharif thanked the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their continued commitment during negotiations, and expressed appreciation for regional support.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment, and Iran signalled caution.
