Tung Chee-hwa Remembered for Deep Hong Kong Commitment at State Funeral

Chinese President Xi Jinping and senior leaders conveyed their condolences from Beijing as Hong Kong said goodbye to its first post‑colonial chief executive, Tung Chee‑hwa, during a solemn state funeral on Sunday.

Xinhua reported that Tung, who passed away on September 8 at age 89, was lauded as “an outstanding contributor to ‘one country, two systems’, a noted patriot, a distinguished social activist, and a close ally of” the Communist Party of China.

“During Tung’s critical illness, the central authorities voiced deep concern for his health,” the report noted. “President Xi Jinping and other senior leaders directed the Hong Kong liaison office to send their best wishes and urged exhaustive efforts to treat him.”

Xinhua added that after Tung’s passing, President Xi, Premier Li Qiang and other leaders “expressed their profound sorrow in various ways and offered sincere condolences to his family.”
