Tunisia Retrieves Four Migrant Bodies After Boat Capsizes Near Ben Guerdane

Tunisian authorities have recovered the bodies of four migrants off the coast of Ben Guerdane in the country’s southeast after their boat capsized, according to a rights group speaking to Anadolu Agency on Saturday.

Mostafa Abdelkebir, head of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, stated that 15 individuals had departed from the coasts of Ben Guerdane and Zarzis in the southeastern town of Medenine on Wednesday, attempting to reach Italy when their vessel encountered difficulties.

Security forces successfully rescued one missing migrant on Friday, while search operations for the remaining individuals continue.

Tunisia serves as a significant departure point for irregular migration toward Europe across the Mediterranean.

However, migration attempts have declined considerably over the past two years following Tunisian authorities’ increased enforcement of migration restrictions and enhanced maritime border controls.
