ISTANBUL — A Turkish soldier was killed over the weekend during a cross-border fire incident along the border with Iran, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Thursday. Both nations are currently investigating the incident.
According to a statement released on X, the incident occurred on October 31 near the Engin Mayin border post on the Turkish-Iranian border. The soldier was killed “as a result of fire assessed to have come from Iran” during an intervention targeting an alleged illegal crossing.
The soldier was wounded during the intervention, but despite prompt medical efforts, he “could not be saved,” the ministry stated.
Turkish authorities launched an immediate investigation and convened with Iranian officials on November 3 to discuss the matter. Iran has also initiated its own investigation “to clarify the incident in question,” with both sides emphasizing that efforts to fully elucidate the incident are continuing in close coordination.
The Engin Mayin post is a key military outpost along the 500-kilometer (300-mile) frontier between Turkiye and Iran.
