Two civilians were killed in a Russian drone strike at a border checkpoint with Moldova, Odesa regional governor Oleg Kiper said Wednesday.
“Tonight, enemy drones attacked the Starokozache international road checkpoint on the border with Moldova,” Kiper wrote on social media.
According to preliminary information, two civilians near the checkpoint were killed and three others were injured.
An image shared by Kiper showed the deserted border post littered with debris.
The attack forced the closure of the checkpoint, located roughly 500 kilometres south of Kyiv, the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service said.
A Moldovan driver was also injured, according to the country’s foreign ministry.
Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said Wednesday that Russia’s war against Ukraine was “increasingly endangering the lives of our citizens as well”.
Tofan said 17 drones had hit Moldovan territory in August alone, more than in all of last year.
“The attacks have intensified so much,” he said during a video posted to Facebook from a cabinet meeting. “It’s becoming the norm, yet at the same time it’s clearly an extremely worrying development.”
Ukraine strikes Russian oil terminal and naval base
Ukraine and Russia continued to exchange attacks against each other’s infrastructure.
Ukrainian forces targeted sites in the Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk and in the Krasnodar region, including a naval base and an oil-loading terminal, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday.
Zelensky said military port facilities and warships believed to be carrying missiles were also hit.
Russia’s defence ministry said its forces struck a Ukrainian cargo vessel carrying alleged military equipment in the Black Sea while en route to Odesa. It also said a Kyiv warehouse belonging to a drone manufacturer had been targeted, according to Russian news agencies.
