The U.S. State Department has confirmed the death of an American diplomat assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. While the department acknowledged the death of a U.S. government employee, it declined to provide further details, citing respect for the family’s privacy.
According to three members of the diplomatic community in Yangon who spoke on condition of anonymity, the man was found dead approximately two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, a long-term lodging facility popular with diplomats and international visitors located about 1.5 kilometers from the American Embassy. Sources indicate that local police are treating the case as a possible homicide and have taken a Thai woman into custody.
Myanmar has been embroiled in widespread conflict since the military ousted elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. Authorities typically restrict information flow to the media; the police station overseeing the area where the Sakura hotel is located declined to comment, and the hotel’s management also refused to discuss the incident. The Thai Embassy in Yangon and Thailand’s Foreign Ministry have not confirmed whether they are providing consular assistance to the suspect.
