UK Forecasts 2026 El Nino as Most Intense Event in Over a Century

Met Office predicts ‘unprecedented’ sea surface temperature rise of 3C (5.4F) plus will heighten extreme weather risks.

UK forecasters have cautioned that the 2026 El Nino could represent the strongest event observed in over a hundred years.

The Met Office stated that the event will increase the likelihood of drought, soaring temperatures, heavy rainfall, and other extreme weather phenomena.

El Nino typically elevates sea-surface temperatures by 1–2 °C (1.8–3.6 °F). The 2026 projections, however, anticipate unprecedented rises exceeding 3 °C (5.4 °F).

Adam Scaife, head of long‑range forecasting at the Met Office, noted, “We should make it clear that this is an unprecedented event. I have never seen an El Nino signal this intense in our forecasts.”

If the spike materialises as predicted, he added, “then 2026 will far exceed our recent experience of El Nino and its worldwide climate influences.”

The chief forecaster further informed the BBC that the three‑degree rise was “unheard‑of in modern climate records.”

Worldwide governments are already contending with record‑setting climate extremes this year. In Indonesia, wildfires have consumed more than 200,000 hectares (494,200 acres), while southwestern Europe has seen widespread devastation that displaced at least 325,000 people between Spain and France. Other nations grapple with severe droughts.

The Met Office predicts that El Nino will bring wetter, stormier conditions to northwestern Europe, including the UK, as autumn and winter arrive in the Northern Hemisphere.

In mid‑August, the UK registered its hottest day of the year when temperatures in west London peaked at 38.1 °C (100.5 °F), surpassing the previous record of 38 °C (100.4 °F) set in June.

Combined with anthropogenic climate change, the Met Office warns that the El Nino is likely to make 2027 the hottest year on record globally.
