UK Confirms Willingness to Allow Germany to Enter Global Combat Air Programme
The United Kingdom has indicated its readiness for Germany to join the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a move announced by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
During his first visit to Berlin since assuming office, Burnham conveyed to Chancellor Friedrich Merz that Britain welcomes Germany’s prospective involvement in GCAP.
Originally conceived as a trilateral partnership among the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan to develop a sixth‑generation fighter aircraft, GCAP subsequently admitted Canada as an observer state in July.
Informally referred to as “Tempest,” the forthcoming jets will integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and next‑generation sensor suites, aligning Western strategies to sustain air superiority amid evolving threats from Russia and China.
