With airfares consistently remaining high, budget-friendly basic economy fares are becoming increasingly appealing. Saving up to $100 on a round-trip domestic flight can free up valuable budget for accommodations, dining, or unique local experiences at your destination.
Having navigated numerous basic economy flights, I am all too familiar with their stringent restrictions. These typically include the inability to select seats in advance, earning no award miles, and boarding at the very end of the process. Additionally, travelers cannot make changes or cancel their itineraries without incurring substantial fees, and — uniquely for United Airlines — carrying a full-size onboard bag is prohibited.
NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account the type of card being reviewed (such as cash back, travel or balance transfer) and the card’s rates, fees, rewards and other features.
However, as a frequent United Airlines traveler, I have a valuable insight to share: holding the United℠ Explorer Card (which carries an annual fee of $0 intro for the first year, then $150) allows you to bypass several of these inconvenient basic economy limitations.
Currently, new applicants of the United℠ Explorer Card can benefit from an attractive welcome offer: earn 70,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening, plus an additional 10,000 bonus miles when you add an authorized user during the same initial three-month period.
Here is a detailed breakdown of how these benefits function.
Earn miles on basic economy
While most major airlines have eliminated the accrual of points or miles on basic economy tickets, United stands out as an exception — provided you possess the appropriate co-branded credit card.
Cardholders of eligible United credit cards, including the United℠ Explorer Card, earn a minimum of 3 miles per dollar spent on United basic economy fares (excluding taxes and specified fees). While this is half of the standard economy earning rate of 6 miles per dollar, it is significantly better than earning nothing. Furthermore, holding elite status with the airline can increase this earning potential.
These miles are earned in addition to the standard 3 miles per dollar spent on all United purchases when using your United℠ Explorer Card.
Owning this card enhances the value of your accumulated miles. Cardholders receive a discount of at least 10% on award tickets operated by United or United Express. If you hold United elite status, this discount increases to at least 15% off.
Board earlier in Group 2
The card grants you access to priority boarding in Group 2. This enables you to board ahead of standard basic economy passengers, who board in Group 6, significantly increasing the likelihood that overhead bin space will be available for your carry-on.
Of course, you might be wondering how this aligns with the basic economy rule that prohibits full-size carry-on bags. Let us clarify how this exception functions.
Bring a full-size carry-on
United enforces its full-size carry-on restriction based strictly on boarding group. Passengers boarding in Group 6 are prohibited from bringing a full-size carry-on bag.
Since the credit card secures Group 2 boarding for you, this particular restriction is effectively bypassed.
Similarly, United Premier members — who board in Group 2 or earlier — are also exempt from the full-size carry-on restriction when traveling on basic economy fares.
…or check a bag instead
If you prefer to avoid the overhead bin hassle, you can choose to check your bag instead.
By paying for your ticket with your United℠ Explorer Card, you and a companion can check your first bags for free on United-operated flights. (If booking an award ticket, ensure you use your card to cover the taxes and fees to qualify for this benefit.)
Please note that if the initial segment of your itinerary is operated by a partner airline, that carrier’s standard baggage policies and fees will apply.
What doesn’t change for basic economy
Of course, even with the optimal United credit card, certain basic economy limitations remain unchanged.
Travelers on basic economy fares will still incur fees for any changes or cancellations, and complimentary seat selection is not available.
Ultimately, the value of a basic economy ticket depends on several personal factors.
If your travel itinerary is subject to change, it is advisable to purchase standard economy tickets. Otherwise, the change or cancellation penalties could easily exceed the initial savings.
Another key consideration is your tolerance for seating arrangements. While a middle seat may be acceptable for short flights, long-haul journeys to destinations like Asia present a different challenge. Each traveler must evaluate whether the potential middle-seat assignment is worth the cost savings.
If your travel plans are firm and you are comfortable with the possibility of sitting in a middle seat, basic economy can be an excellent way to save significantly. Just be sure to book using a United card, such as the United℠ Explorer Card, to mitigate the most significant drawbacks.
