[U.S. Raises Serious Concerns Over China’s WTO Non‑Compliance Amid Growing Industry Backlash]
In a hearing assessing China’s adherence to World Trade Organization obligations, a senior U.S. trade official cautioned that Beijing is aggressively chasing whole economic sectors for global dominance while preserving a non‑market system. Terry McCartin, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) for China, Mongolia and Taiwan Affairs, asserted that China’s anti‑competitive tactics threaten the stability of the world trading regime. “Critically, despite twenty‑five years of WTO membership, China continues to embrace a non‑market economic model,” McCartin declared during his opening remarks. He elaborated that Beijing now concentrates resources on selecting key industry domains to pursue international dominance. This development arrives as American steelmakers lobby Washington to evaluate further tariffs and cooperate with allied economies to respond to China’s excess steel capacity, and they presented their grievances concerning Beijing’s trade practices ahead of the upcoming Wednesday forum.
