Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has already made his senior international debut, has been omitted from India’s 15‑player U‑19 squad for the forthcoming home series against Australia.
Why is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi not in India U-19 squad?
The decision is unrelated to his form or performance; a BCCI rule enacted in 2016 bars any player from featuring in more than one edition of the U‑19 World Cup.
Having represented India at the 2026 U‑19 World Cup, Sooryavanshi is now barred from participating in any further edition of the tournament under the existing regulation.
The rule has impacted several high‑profile cricketers before. Washington Sundar, for example, was excluded from the 2018 U‑19 World Cup under the same restriction.
Prior to the rule’s implementation, players like Sarfaraz Khan, Sandeep Sharma and Vijay Zol competed in multiple editions.
Consequently, Sooryavanshi’s omission from the latest India U‑19 setup stems from eligibility policy rather than his on‑field performance.
Aaryavir Sehwag, Anvay Dravid included
The India U‑19 squad for the Australia series features Aaryavir Sehwag, son of former India opening batter Virender Sehwag, and Anvay Dravid, son of former India head coach Rahul Dravid.
Aaryavir, a leg‑spin all‑rounder, has been picked for the 50‑over matches and presently represents the West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League.
Anvay, a wicket‑keeper batter, has also earned a place in the one‑day squad after accumulating **101 runs in two 50‑over matches** during India’s July tour of Sri Lanka.
Neither of them has been selected for the red‑ball fixtures.

The 50‑over side will be led by Uttarakhand batter Lakshya Raichandani, with Madhya Pradesh’s Yashbardhan Chauhan serving as vice‑captain.
Chauhan will captain the red‑ball side, while Raichandani will act as his deputy.

India U‑19 will contest three 50‑over matches in Rajkot on September 18, 21 and 23, before moving into two multi‑day red‑ball fixtures.
The first red‑ball encounter is slated for September 27‑30 in Rajkot, with the second scheduled from October 5‑8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium ‘B’ Ground in Ahmedabad.
For Sooryavanshi, the regulation signals a shift beyond the U‑19 World Cup cycle despite his youth. Having already broken into the senior national side, he remains in contention for opportunities with India’s senior team, but another U‑19 World Cup campaign will not be possible under the current BCCI policy.
